It wasn’t the perfect start to 2019 by any means, after three straight losses to start the 2019 season, the game against the Eagles on Good Friday was a big game for the football club. In each of the three games we had played before Friday, we had played some good footy and put ourselves in winning positions only to let that slip in the last quarter. Taking nothing away from the teams we played, we felt, as a playing group, that we were improving each week however, weren’t playing our best football for long enough.
In the lead up to the Eagles game, Gav and the coaches made it very clear that we had dropped below our standards in our physicality and our attack on the man and the ball. As a player, getting questioned on your effort and physicality never sits well and this became a big focus for the whole team against the Eagles.
I thought the result of the game against the Eagles was a direct indicator of our physicality, work rate and pressure. We worked hard in very warm conditions and it was great to see some fantastic individual performances from many of our players which helped contribute to a solid win.
As happy as we were post game, our focus immediately turned to the game tomorrow night against Glenelg, who are currently playing some great football and will no doubt be a great test for us. We are fully aware as players that the commitment we made to our standards last week must be replicated week in week out to achieve the success we want. With only 5 days between the games, the boys have recovered well and are looking forward to again showing our physicality and ruthless attack against a strong opposition.
I must also thank the supporters who continue to support us through thick and thin. We appreciate the time and support you give to the club and love walking off the ground in front of you all after a win! We hope to see you at City Mazda Stadium tomorrow night to continue that support.
Cheers,
Tom Keough
