Saturday was our first opportunity for the year to see the players in full match conditions. It is always a little difficult to gauge team performance when you are competing against yourself, however our focus for the match was on team structures and it was pleasing to see most playing their role as required.
Our skill level was satisfactory for our first match and despite the hot conditions, the player’s work rate was pleasing. Overall, I feel confident that the players are understanding the game plan and have the physical conditioning required for the upcoming season. Some strong individual performances included John Noble on a wing, Elliot Duncan in the backline and Patrick Fairlie on ball.
We look forward to our younger players staking their claim for league selection in the coming weeks. It was also pleasing to see four players from our underage program, equip themselves well, despite minimal exposure to the senior football. With two weeks before our first trial against opposition, our focus will turn from physical conditioning, to fine tuning our offensive and defensive structures. The players and coaching staff are very much looking forward to the challenge ahead.
